Sports Bio

I joined SportsFilter sometime in 2002 and from 2002-2012 I went by the username "terrapin." In 2012 I started migrating away from that moniker to my real name and with rcade's help all of my site contributions are now attributed to my current username.

On 19 January, 2012 I became a moderator of the site. I am generally accessible via IM (rickscully@jabber.org or t3rr4ping4rd3ns on AIM) and often on the SportsFilter IRC channel in you need to reach me.

The teams I love: Steelers helmet

Pittsburgh Steelers football — I have been a Steelers fan for as long as I can remember despite growing up in the Washington, DC area. My first sports memories all involve Super Bowls in the mid-70s.

Arsenal shieldArsenal — I have played and loved soccer all my life, but have never been able to get behind any of the many American league teams that have popped up over the decades. I used to attend Washington Diplomats games as a child and one of my most memorable sporting moments was traveling to Giants stadium to see Pele play for the Cosmos. I have no real reason to support Arsenal, per se, but as I have read nearly everything Nick Hornby has written—including Fever Pitch—I feel like I have supported them for ages. I have attended three European matches — a Championship League match between Watford and Wolverhampton in December 2001, a Premiere League match between Fulham and Wigan in 2007 and another Premiere League match between Fulham and West Ham United in 2010.

Favorite sports: Preferred leagues in parenthesis.
• soccer/football (EPL/Int'l)
• american football (NFL)
• baseball (MLB)
• hockey (NHL/NCAA/Olympics)
• tennis

I don't believe NASCAR is a sport. I personally think it is a challenging exhibition of endurance and skill, as well as a form of entertainment, but not sport. Sorry, if that offends you. It shouldn't, unless you are a redneck who likes watching people turn left real fast. ;)

Weaver Wonder Wins One for Woeful Angels: Before only 27,288 fans, local boy Jered Weaver helped the Angels forget their slow start by striking out nine and walking one in the first home no-hitter for the team since Nolan Ryan's in 1975.

Bayern Munich Earn Champions League Final with Victory over Real Madrid: Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho will miss a chance to face his old squad and Bayern Munich's Jupp Heynckes gets revenge on the team that fired him despite winning the Champion's League title in 1998. Bayern Munich goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, played a major part, saving Real's first two penalties - from Ronaldo and Kaka. Sergio Ramos's missed effort is thought to be somewhere in low orbit. Bayern Munich will probably be favoured as the pre-selected "neutral" ground will in fact be their home stadium. Plus Chelsea will be without many starters due to accumulated yellow cards and the idiocy of their captain, John Terry.

Manchester City Wins Premier League

Wife and I jumped around the room after watching the Arsenal match. Due to work (me) and a previous engagement (her) we watched on a 6 hour delay and I had to avoid the Internet for all that time. I even mowed the lawn to avoid learning results until my wife got home some could watch together. Hurray for 3rd! Now re-sign Robin van Persie!

P.S. I have the best wife :)

Extortion plan works again: The lease at the old place up, the Viking (finally) get new stadium deal, and Minnesota tax payers help pay. Vikings put up $477,000,000, State of Minnesota taxpayers put up $348,000,000, and the city of Minneapolis gets double-dipped chipping in an additional $150,000,000. Vikings staying in Minnesota? Apparently, priceless.

Glad Man City won today even if I would prefer they don't win it all. Glad Aston Villa held Sp*rs too. I am the biggest Fulham fan next weekend :)
