Sports Bio

Number 8...just like yaz. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. Its been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But, baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and could be again. Terence Mann

Why Wrigley Field Must Be Destroyed: Destroy it. Annihilate it. Collapse it with the sort of charges that put the Sands Hotel out of its misery in Vegas. Implosion or explosion, get rid of it. That pile of quaintness has to go. Not merely the structure, but the ground on which it stands.

Why Wrigley Field Must Be Destroyed

Can we get a package deal rate if we include Fenway?

Wow, you're a broken record.

Do we need the litany of poor seating, high prices, and on, and on? Boston management has been trying to sell tickets based on the age and supposed history of the park rather than on the performance of the team. I might add that the history is one of 6 successful years followed by 89 years of frustration and poor play. Only the past 8 years have shown success, and those days appear to be in decline. I for one could do very nicely with a more modern, more comfortable park housing a competitive, not necessarily championship team. I'm a Red Sox fan, but not one who sees the team as the be all, end all, of the world. I'm far more a baseball fan than a fan of any team.

Please go root for the Orioles. They have a great park more to your liking, and their mediocrity will warm your heart.

SportsFilter: The Wednesday Huddle

Pujols was 3 for 4 last night with 2 RBI. All 3 hits were ground balls that never left the infield, but you gotta start somewhere.

CBS Sports:

Albert Pujols' slugging percentage is .275 right now. Josh Hamilton's is .866. If Hamilton were to go zero for his next 273, his slugging percentage would be .275 on the nose. That's almost a half season with zero hits in order to seep down that low.

Josh Hamilton Has 4-Homer Game in Baltimore

One less RBI than Pujols has for the season (he's really been kicking ass since his first home run).

Cole Hamels Admits Hitting Bryce Harper on Purpose

Either way, Hamels' expected pitching date is only pushed back one day (from Saturday to Sunday), but the rotation gets funky during this time (extra starters or re-ordering with the return of Hamels).

Ahh, thanks.

Cole Hamels Admits Hitting Bryce Harper on Purpose

Hamels began serving his suspension Monday night. With Cliff Lee expected to come off the disabled list and start Wednesday, coupled with Thursday's day off, Hamels really won't miss a turn in the rotation.

Roy Halladay will likely pitch on regular rest Saturday and Hamels would then start Sunday against the San Diego Padres.

I don't know how that fits or if it changes what you posted grum. Too much math for me and it's late.

Cole Hamels Admits Hitting Bryce Harper on Purpose

1 game, unless the Phillies want to disrupt every other starter's rotation spot. Given that includes Lee and Halladay, I don't see that happening.

I don't follow the Phillies schedule close enough to know. I was going by a talk radio show where they claimed because of an off day they wouldn't skip Hamels. At the very least, they don't have to if they don't want to.

Whether to be morally outraged by that is an exercise left to the reader.

Well, to be clear, I'm not outraged. I don't think he's hurting the integrity of the game. I have no problem with Pujols, or Manny, or Ortiz showboating. I don't want the game to return to the 50s. I just think he looks like an idiot preening in that situation.

Grum believes that because he's Pujols, and because of his past excellence, he's entitled. I think the exact opposite, that because he's Pujols, with his talent and history, admiring a golfed shot, after constantly complaining that the home run drought was not a big deal and he wasn't trying to hit them, is beneath him.

Cole Hamels Admits Hitting Bryce Harper on Purpose

There is a risk of injury, even if there's no intent to injure. But isn't that true in the examples I cited, as well as many others?

Yep. I'm not disagreeing with you. Just saying that sometimes things go wrong, and because of that, throwing at someones back, even with no attempt to injure, though part of the game, shouldn't be taken lightly.

The whole think just comes off as bizarre. The awkward reasoning, the admitting, and just the fact that Hamels doesn't seem to be the type.

He's been suspended 5 games, which means 0 games in pitching terms.

On one hand, getting hit in the ass or back or arm by a big league pitch must hurt like hell. The intent, then is to make someone hurt, as in feel pain. The intent was not to hurt him, as in to injure or make him leave the game. Beaning another player has the capacity to seriously injure him, hurting him in the worst way.

That sounds great as long as there's an asterisk next to it that points out when throwing a 90 plus mph fastball at the back it's not outside the realm of possibility the ball gets away from you.

How to go 0-8 and still win the ballgame

I wish I had seen that game.

No you don't.

(and I'd say that if the Sox had won. Terrible game.)

It was a no-doubter, not a wall-scraper.

So anything other than a wall scraper is 'crushed' and the hitter should take 4 steps while watching the ball? That makes no sense. This was an average home run. Nothing special about it. Pujols looked like an idiot.

The fact is Pujols hit an everyday home run off of a hanging 84 mile per hour slider. You're the highest paid player in the game and it took you over a month to hit your first home run. Just fucking get around the bases.

OR, as was my original point, let's realize we're the media (and some fans) are hypocrites when it comes to this. If Manny had done this, we wouldn't have heard the end of it. When Pujols does the same, nobody has a problem with it.

He's been doing that for years

Exactly.

as have many other batters when they crush a no-doubter.

Eh, 390 plus feet? You're using the word crush lightly.

Pujols finally hits first home run.

Golfs one out, takes 4 steps before running because he's a bad ass. If this had been Manny the integrity of the would be at stake. But it's Pujols, so not so much.
